Từ vựng chủ đề Weather

Tương tự như các chủ đề khác, khi xây dựng bộ từ vựng IELTS Speaking, bạn nên chia nhỏ từ vựng thành các nhóm để thuận tiện cho việc ghi chép và học thuộc. Ở đây, chúng ta sẽ chia thành các nhóm từ vựng chủ đề, cụm từ và idioms

Cụm từ vựng

• To come out the sun: Mặt trời ló ra 
• To dress up warm: mặc quần áo ấm 
• To get caught in the rain: Gặp mưa bất chợt 
• Get drenched: Bị ướt sũng 
• To be rained off: Bị hủy hoặc hoãn lại vì thời tiết xấu 
• Scorching hot: Nóng như thiêu đốt 
• Rain pours down: Mưa như trút nước 
• Soak up the sunshine: Tắm nắng, tận hưởng ánh nắng mặt trời 
• Clear up: Trời trong xanh trở lại, không còn mưa hay mây.
• Bucket down: Mưa xối xả, rất lớn.
• Bundle up: Mặc quần áo nhiều/dày để giữ ấm.
• Melt away: Biến mất, tan chảy.
• Cool down: Bớt nóng lại, hạ nhiệt.

Idioms

• Have your head in the clouds: Đầu óc trên mây 
• Under the weather: Tình trạng sức khỏe ốm yếu
• Cook up a storm: Nấu hoặc chuẩn bị một bữa ăn hoành tráng
• To be full of hot air: Nói nhiều, hứa nhiều nhưng lại không làm 
• Calm before the storm: Bình yên trước cơn bão 
• Be a breeze: Dễ dàng để làm gì

Part 1

1. What’s the weather like in your country?

It’s quite changeable really … we have periods of time with clear blue skies then all of a sudden we’ll have torrential rain.

2. Which months have the best weather in your country?

Well … I suppose it’s a matter of personal taste really … I like it around the end of October and November … I’m not fond of the heatwaves we often get during the summer … It’s not freezing cold during these months and we still get lots of sunny spells.

3. Does it bother you much when it rains?

It depends … if I get caught in the rain and I get drenched I don’t like it … but I’m a gardener so a drop of rain is good for my plants.

Part 2

1. Describe your favorite season or time of the year.

You should say:

• what season (or time of the year) it is
• what the weather is like at this time
• what people usually do at this time

and explain why you enjoy that season or time of the year or/and explain why you enjoy that season or time of the year more than other seasons or times of the year.

Well, I’m living in Hanoi and you know, the weather patterns are quite different between the North and the South of Vietnam. There are four distinct seasons in Hanoi and the one that I like the most is autumn.

Autumn in Hanoi usually lasts for about 3 months, starting in September and ending in November. It seems to be the most comfortable season in the whole year. The weather during the fall is normally cool with some sunny spells. The temperature tends to fluctuate from 20 to 25 degree celsius. Occasionally, there are light rains in the evening but they are often just short showers.

With the cool breezes, it is ideal for people to get together outside and hang out with their friends. Anothing thing is that everyone wants to have picnics in the urban areas near Hanoi and take some pictures with their family. Also, this time of the year marks the beginning of a new school year for students around Vietnam.

In contrast, the summer is boiling, so it is torturing to have to go out in the streets under the hot sun. Likewise, the winter is freezing and in a typical spring there are usually heavy rains. So, these are really unattractive features of the other seasons. However, the fresh weather during the autumn really makes me feel relaxed and energizes me to do a lot of things. That is the major reason why I prefer the fall and why it has always been my favorite time of the Year.

Describe a time when the weather caused you to change your plan.

You should say:

• when it happened
• what happened
• how you changed your plan

Last month, I was going to have a picnic with my friends at a camping site on the outskirts of the city. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we had to cancel our plan.

In fact, we planned to have a picnic to refresh ourselves and to relax after the final term examination. Everything needed such as food, drinks and even a change of clothes was well- prepared. I was so excited about this trip that I couldn’t sleep, and ended up chatting with my friends all night. 

However, on the next day, it was raining heavily, despite the fact that the weather was forecast to be nice and warm. As a result, we made a decision to put off our plans. Instead, we threw a party at my friend’s house. We made some favorite dishes together, and then played cards. The ones who lost had to buy snacks for all of us. 

Surprisingly, we soon forgot all about our misfortune over the picnic. By the way, we enjoyed this party a lot, it helped us to chill out and get ready for the new term.
