Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2 – Argumentative/Opinion/Agree or Disagree

Đề bài: The fact that enormous sums are paid for pieces of art is not acceptable at a time when many people around the world live in poverty.

Discuss this statement and give your opinion.

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2 cho dạng Opinion (Agree or Disagree)

It is true that pieces of art in today’s world can change hands for enormous sums. Works by artists such as Picasso, da Vinci and Rembrandt have been sold for millions of dollars. Recently, a Modigliani was sold to a billionaire for one hundred and seventy million dollars. It certainly seems obscene that such figures are spent when many people around the world live in poverty.

The work of many charities would be transformed by the money generated by just one of these art sales and in turn, the lives of ordinary people in need would be transformed. Medicines, food and shelter amongst other things could easily be provided, saving lots of lives, many of which would be children. When the issue is looked at from this point of view, the art sales world certainly seems obscene.

However, in my opinion, things are unlikely to change. Human greed is endemic and people who have the drive to earn that amount of money and who actually have access to these sums in cash are not often people who will part with their wealth. Lots of wealthy people support many charities, but it is unlikely that they would completely relinquish their access to the luxuries that accompany their lives. The works of art are also often seen as investments in themselves, to be held on to for a period of time and then resold at a profit.

In conclusion, in an ideal world, the vast sums of money that are spent on fine and rare works of art would be better spent on helping those in need. In reality, however, this is unlikely to take place.

Đề bài: Some people today believe that it is acceptable to use physical force to discipline children, but others feel it is completely unacceptable.

Discuss this view and give your opinion.

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2 cho dạng Discussion

Punishing children with physical force, or corporal punishment as it is also called, is something that was accepted not so long ago and people over the age of forty may well remember it. Nowadays, corporal punishment is against the law in most countries and adults who practice it can be taken to court. Children are always a vulnerable group and they depend on adults for protection and education. Of course, part of the growing up process is testing and breaking boundaries and it is nearly always necessary to instill discipline in a child. Whether or not it is necessary to use physical force to do so can be a very emotive subject.

Supporters of corporal punishment often defend their standpoint by explaining that the corporal punishment is not, or should not be, excessive. They do not argue that a child should be beaten severely until he or she is bruised or cut. They argue that just the infliction of mild pain causes effective discipline and also the fear that it might be applied. People especially who grew up experiencing it might offer this point of view.

People who oppose using physical force on a child would say that the vulnerability and innocence of a child means that force should never be used. Children need to trust adults and believe that no harm will come to them. Additionally, children learn from adults and it is argued that corporal punishment will only teach children that force is an answer to various problems. It is also claimed that corporal punishment has no added benefits over other forms of discipline that do not require physical force. Using it can cause psychological harm to children and should be classed as child abuse.

Personally, I do not believe that limited use of forms of corporal punishment can cause harm and a parent who administers a mild form of it to his or her child should not be subject to criminal proceedings. Nevertheless, I would not use it myself. I can also recognise the possibilities of adults who are not a child’s parents misusing corporal punishment. Therefore, I believe that on balance physical force to discipline children should not be permitted.

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2 – Advantages and Disadvantages

Đề bài: Some say that it would be better if the majority of employees worked from home instead of traveling to a workplace every day.

Do you think the advantages of working from home outweigh the disadvantages?

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2 cho dạng Advantages and Disadvantages

In many parts of the world, and in many different sectors, more and more people are staying at home rather than commuting to work.

Opponents of home-working say that being together in a workplace with colleagues is an important part of keeping people healthy and happy. Staying at home, never meeting people can lead to depression. They also say that, from a professional point of view, it is important to spend time in formal and less formal situations with co-workers. Although it is argued that interaction can happen via computers, especially with a visual element such as video conferencing, they don’t believe this can ever replace face to face contact.

For me, the advantages of working from home more than outweigh the disadvantages. Firstly, many workers prefer home working, saying they function more effectively because they can relax, without the pressure and waste of the long commute. With new technologies placing people in the same room metaphorically, it is becoming much easier to do this. With less travel there is a smaller carbon footprint, although this is a claim which has yet to be proved because many people choose to live in remote areas and car use is not significantly reduced when working at home.

Finally, what clinches the argument for me is the fact that working at home enables many people to join the workforce who would not otherwise be able to do so.

This option is particularly liberating for women because they often have more caring responsibilities.

To sum up, I strongly believe that working from home is the fairest and most efficient option for most people.

Causes and Effects/Causes and Solutions/Problems and Solutions

Đề bài: People are having more and more sugar-based drinks. What are the reasons? What are the solutions to make people drink less?

Bài mẫu cho dạng Causes and Effects/Causes and Solutions/Problems and Solutions

People are consuming more and more sugar-based drinks such as soft or energy drinks. I will discuss a number of reasons for this as well as several ways to encourage people to reduce their consumption of such drinks.

There are two main reasons why sugar-based drinks are consumed in large amounts everyday. Firstly, such drinks provide extra energy, increase mental alertness and help consumers to maintain high concentration necessary for their work. Most modern jobs are becoming more and more demanding and require people to spend greater effort to succeed, consequently leading to the popularity of sugar-based drinks. Secondly, the increased consumption of sugar-based drinks is linked to consumers’ lack of awareness and knowledge of a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as the dominance of fast food in the food industry. That is why sedentary lifestyles and convenient but nutrient-poor meals which include sugar-based drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi are being favored by a large number of people.

Although reducing the consumption of sugar-based drinks is a complex task, there are a few ways that could be done to discourage people from using those drinks regularly. One instance is to impose higher taxes on the production and distribution of sugar-based drinks, which inevitably increases their price. This may have an effect on the amount of such drinks being consumed. Another thing is that there should be more educational propagation campaigns that encourage people to follow healthy dietary guidelines and lifestyles and to refrain from using sugar-based drinks.

In conclusion, the problem of people having more and more sugar-based drinks is caused by a number of factors as discussed in the essay. Increasing taxes on sugar-based drinks and running propaganda campaigns to raise consumers’ awareness of their health are two feasible solutions to combat such problems.

Two-Part Question

Đề bài: As children become adults, their social behavior changes in some ways.

What are the main differences between young children’s social behavior and that of adults? To what extent are the changes that take place good?

Bài mẫu cho dạng Two-Part Question

Although some people would argue that we don’t change in any fundamental ways as we develop from young children to adults, I feel there are some marked differences in our social behavior as we get older.

Firstly, most young children tend to express themselves much more openly than they do when older, showing great extremes of happiness and misery. However, when they are adults they learn to hide their real feelings. This can mean that children have very volatile relationships – for example, groups of youngsters will often fall out and row with each other at one moment, and then immediately afterwards they have mended their differences and are back as close companions. Some people say this change in behavior is good, that showing extreme feelings is selfish and being a member of any community requires moderation of expression. Other people condemn this change, saying childish openness about feelings is more honest and as such, it should be valued. In many cultures there are proverbs which say something like ‘truth comes from the mouths of the very young’, and adults sometimes lament the fact that they no longer feel things as deeply as they did when they were children. They regard this as a great loss.

In my view, it is a good thing if adults can retain some childlike qualities in their social behavior throughout their life. I feel that, within reason, it is healthy to show feelings openly because it leads to stronger relationships. However, adults should always keep in mind the consequences of expressing what they feel the moment they feel it. They need to realize that sometimes saying what they feel is simply selfish and if it hurts others, then they should keep their thoughts to themselves.
